JonDeTech granted a patent for presence detection

JonDeTech has been granted a new patent by the Swedish Patent and Registration Office in the area of presence detection. The patent relates to a method and system for detecting a human being.

Presence detection is the ability to detect if a person is physically present within a particular area. Passive IR sensors in conjunction with smart algorithms are used for contactless detection of the IR radiation that is emitted in the form of body heat.

The patent is a key feature to get computers in power save mode when a user leaves their desk, or for waking up the electronics in displays when a person approaches. Other possible applications include smart IoT solutions where the heating and ventilation systems can be controlled based on the actual occupancy of an office landscape, or to optimize the air conditioning and sound systems in a vehicle depending on where the passengers are seated.

– This patent can be used for a wide range of innovative solutions to increase the degree of energy efficiency in society. Examples include the projects we have been running together with Ofilm for some time to extend battery life in laptops and smart door locks. But the needs and opportunities are far greater than that, says Karin Thurberg, Chief Product Officer JonDeTech.

The method on which the patent is based provides a dynamic and self-adjusting system that adapts to changes in the environment to avoid both false positive and false negative signals during presence detection. The patent, which has number SE543333C2, refers to the Swedish market but will over time be extended to other markets such as China, Europe, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and the US.
